A bit of help please for restructuring pressure tank
« on: February 26, 2023, 08:47:14 AM »
Long story about this, which I can tell in another post if asked to. Photos attached. I rent, so know nothing about the well, and the out of state landlord said to fix it. The pump is holding pressure but short cycling and the tank seems waterlogged. The tank was trashed picked and installed. It's an Well-X-Trol WX-202. Landlord said it replaced a smaller tank. Old 3 story home with 2 full baths and 2 half baths and three outdoor hose bibs. The pump is a 7.5 GPM Flotec/Pentair FP4322-08 with a 30-50 pressure switch attached which I just replaced with new. Was doing research on the Terry Love forums is how I landed here looking at maybe installing a CSV1A with a small tank. Is this feasible with my current pump?

Thanks,
Frank

Yes the PK1A with the 4.5 gallon tank is all you need.  30/50 is probably max with that pump.  But if you even upgrade the pump the same PK1A kit will work up to 50/70 pressure without any changes except the settings.

So when I order it I should have it pre set for 50psi Cary?

No.  You want the CSV set for 40 PSI and use a 30/50 pressure switch.

Cary,

I've ordered the CSV and the 4.5 gallon tank since I already have a new pressure switch. The switch is located on the pump, with the sensing pressure coming from the pump itself as you can see in the photos. Is this configuration ok to keep or do I have to move the pressure switch to the CSV itself?

Thanks,
Frank

Either the pressure switch or the sensing tube to the pressure switch needs to be moved to the CSV or tank.  With an additional switch as comes in the PK1A you can wire around the switch on the motor as shown in the wiring diagram for jet pumps.

So I don't know what I did wrong piping this up. At first I attached the pressure switch line to the CSV where the gauge is attached in the photo below. The pump never shut off with the water running. I put the sensing line back to where it was originally and it shuts off at 50psi, but immediately drops to about 35psi. What am I doing wrong Cary?

You had it right the first time. The CSV should never let the pump shut off as long as water is being used. The pump should shut off a minute or two after you shut off all taps.

My mistake Cary, the pump never shut off WITHOUT the water running. The pump pressure went up to 60psi so I shut the pump off manually because I was worried the pressure would get too high. What should the back pressure be before the pump will shut off? I remember reading that the CSV does create some back pressure.

If the max pump pressure is 60 PSI, you do not want to use a 40/60 switch.  Reduce the pressure switch to 30/50 and the pump will shut off when no water is being used.

It is a 30-50 switch with the CSV set at 40psi like you recommended. Tank is set at 28psi. Pump keeps building pressure when the water is not in use when the sensing line is attached to the CSV. Works normal when the sensing line is attached to the pump.

With such a large tank I think it is just taking a long time to fill from the minimum flow of the CSV.  But the pressure should be increasing from 40 when all the taps are closed.  If so, just set the CSV to about 47 PSI while running a shower, then it will only have to fill the tank from 47 to 50 and should take but a minute or two.

Cary,

What would the backpressure at the 7.5 GPM Flotec/Pentair FP4322-08 pump be with the CSV set at 40 into a 20 gallon Well-X-Trol WX-202 tank? At what pressure should I start to be alarmed and shut it off?

Lol!  Part of the problem is that pump has a max pressure of about 60 PSI, which is why the pressure switch can't be higher than 30/50.  Nothing to be alarmed about.  Just adjust the CSV and pressure switch off pressures closer together so it takes less than 3 minute to fill the tank to 50 PSI.
