Surface gravity irrigation well size
« on: November 07, 2012, 04:57:04 PM »
hi,

we have a small ranch with one domestic well pumping 22gpm 160' deep for our new home being built.

we have supplemental water rights for our fields and i need to another well for that water.  i want another well about 400 feet away from the existing well to water our fields.  the water will dump in a ditch and i think i need 100gpm or better to fill the ditch for surface irrigation through gates.  can you give me any idea on pump size and type?  also, how big should the well pipe be.  i don't have power there right now but will in the future.  i'm wondering if a portable generator would operate well in the meantime.  i don't think i need a pressure tank since the water will dump in the ditch.

thanks for the help!

To get 100 gPM from 160' deep, you will need a 7.5 HP pump.  It takes a fairly large generator to run this size pump but, it can be done.
