Well pipe crud

I am currently replacing my dead well pump and can see that there is a significant amount of wet crud on the inside of the well pipe.
Is this crud damaging and is there any way of resolving the problem without replacing the pipe?

Crud that builds up in the pipe is probably something like an iron bacteria.  The well probably needs to be shocked with chlorine, but it is very hard to get the pipe cleaned out.  If you let it dry well sometimes the crud will break up and fall out when banging on the pipe.
